Students will acquire a basic foundation in understanding and producing original works of art through applying the elements and principles of art and design. Students work on a combination of two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects applying basic art theory concerning aesthetics and conceptual development. Emphasis on creative process and exploration in a variety of media provide a broad exposure to the Visual Arts.
CHARACTER DESIGN UNIT
1. Our first activity of the year is to get our feet wet with basic animation! This activity will help us to gain insight into the world character design, style, model sheets and movement. Below are the links to videos we watched in class as well as the handout I gave you in class. Glen Keane Talk Video

Character Design Project Handout Please complete the reflection and rubric when you're finished (link can be found on the homepage)

PRINTMAKING UNIT
2. Now that you're done with our first project, it's time to start thinking about printmaking! Printmaking is essentially about making art in multiples using a variety of techniques from etching, to block printing to screen printing. To get you warmed up, we're doing a watercolor monoprint microlab. Remember that a microlab is just a warm-up for the bigger project. Here is the handout I gave you in class to get started.

3. Now that you've experimented with watercolor mono prints, we're going to begin thinking about big project of this printmaking unit: block prints. Using nature for inspiration, think of what kind of stamp you can design to create an interesting pattern. Finish the packet, and sketches for homework. Be ready to come in next academic cycle with an idea.

PORTRAIT UNIT
Thinking about the video you watched in class about the portrait artist Chuck Close, how can we make a portrait in an untraditional way? For your next project you'll be exploring faces, much like Chuck Close, but through collage instead of paint. Please complete the microlab below to practice. In class we'll go over specific techniques for applying color through collage.

MUSIC AND DESIGN UNIT
For this next project, we're going to think about music and how it can influence the way we draw and make art. More specifically, we'll be doing Zentangle and free associative doodling paired with design to create an album cover. The album cover can be for any music you choose. We'll do a free associative drawing exercise in class, as well as talk about other album designs throughout history for artists like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and more.

SPACE AND RELIEF SCULPTURE UNIT
For this next project, we're going to think about layers of space (and how to create the illusion of depth) and relief sculpture. We'll talk about landscapes, and the influence of landscape painting from the old master artists. You'll pick one to learn from and recreate it
3-dimensionally using plaster and wood! Then you'll paint it using acrylic. This will take two academic weeks.

ARTISTIC ILLUSIONS UNIT
For this next project, we're going to think about illusions (and how to create an image that can be interpreted in two different ways). We'll talk about M.C. Escher, and the influence of his artwork on the math and art world. Your final piece will explore value, line, and space.
