Art School Prep is a new course offered for seniors interested in applying to art school for admission in the fall of 2018. Students not only develop portfolios, but cultivate a personal vision and articulate their own artistic process by building a body of work meaningful to them.Students will also have the opportunity to see art school presentations from around the country, and meet working artists from the field of their choice.
It's that time of year again! Art schools will be visiting to tell us all about their programs. Please see Ms. McCabe in Multimedia for the schedule.
1.Read this blog post by Artist and Professor Clara Lieu about preparing a portfolio for art school .We'll talk about it Monday! You're going to get messy Monday- so don't wear anything too nice. Email with any questions.
STILL-LIFE UNIT
2. Alright guys, we'll be working on our chair microlab Monday and Tuesday, and then beginning our large scale still-life of your favorite childhood game beginning Wednesday. Please begin to think about what that game might be, and how you can get your hands on it to bring it in to class. You'll need to work on your still-lives over shop week (I highly recommend stopping by art club Tuesday or Thursday for check-in on progress).

3. Great job on your first critique! Now that we're finished with our first unit (chairs and games) we're going to be moving onto our natural object unit! It's up to you to make the changes/finishing touches on your game still-life. If you want to show me your progress, I'd love to see it at any time before the end of the term.
This week our microlab will be about working in color, manipulating light, and composing dynamic drawings. You'll be drawing dissected fruits and veggies from life in class. At the end of the week we'll begin our crazy unconventional piece inspired by Thomas Mills, to be finished over shop week. I'm here every Tuesday and Thursday after school- I encourage you to come and check in.

4. This week we'll be working through the Thomas Lyon Mills project. Each day will be a drawing day culminating in a deconstruction day. So, over shop week you drew a natural object from life with charcoal (that's the first drawing). Monday we drew natural objects with wet charcoal. Tuesday we drew our natural objects with sumi ink. Wednesday you're going to choose one to deconstruct and reconstruct during class.
HUMAN FIGURE AND PORTRAITS UNIT
5. Now that you've finished your Thomas Lyon Mills project (and the microlab) by deconstructing and reconstructing an image it's time to talk about portraits and the human body. Portraits are a really great opportunity for artists to express a feeling, event, memory or personality. For this unit you'll be studying not only portraits (faces) but also the body. To understand the body, we need to understand what happens underneath the skin. So, we'll be beginning the week with a skeleton drawing microlab (attached below), and then transitioning into some portrait practice in our sketchbooks culminating into a final full body self portrait. We'll be looking to artist Alice Neel for inspiration.

PERSPECTIVE AND SPACE UNIT
6. Now that you've finished your Alice Neel project (and the microlab) it's time to talk about perspective and creating space. Learning perspective and applying value to a space are a really great opportunity for artists to explore atmospheric mood.. For this unit you'll be studying not only perspective (angles and vanishing points) but also tone and value. So, we'll be beginning the week with an ordinary spaces drawing microlab (attached below), preparing us for the final combined spaces piece (imagined, real, and observe- project also attached below).

COLLAGE AND MIXED MEDIA UNIT
7. Now that you've finished your combined spaces project (and the chalk pastel microlab) it's time to talk about collage and mixed media.. More specifically, we'll be spending the week on a shorter term project inspired by artist Wangechi Mutu. She creates portraits out of magazine clippings that inspire feelings of disgust, fear, repulsion and appreciation. In addition, it's up to you to organize the work you've done this semester in an orderly way. You will schedule a time during class this week to do a portfolio review with me to check your progress and completion of all projects so far. There will be no microlab for his project see as how it will be due next academic cycle.
Monday: Look at Wangechi Mutu's work and schedule portfolio reviews with Ms. Mac (Schedule sign up will be in the front of the room on the Demo table).
Tuesday: Collect all artwork and make neat piles within class folder. Label.
Wed- Friday: Collect materials and begin building mixed media/collaged portrait.

ARTISTIC HABITS UNIT
For this project, I want you to think about the portfolio reviews we had a couple of weeks ago. Think about the processes that really interest you. What materials do you like working with? What topics are important for you to explore? For this project, you'll be creating a piece of art based on the direction you want your art to go. Do you want to explore sculpture more? Painting? Are you really interested in character design? Once you figure out your direction, you'll need to look into a couple of artists that are doing the same thing. It's good, as an artist, to have a practice where you're checking out what other artists in the world are doing with ideas similar to yours. How can you make your work unique? What can you learn from these other artists? Once you've found the topic and materials you want to explore, and you've found an artist to inform your journey, you can begin working on your final piece!
